About Gary
Gary Nunnally was born in Texas but grew up on the family farm in New Mexico, not far from a site homesteaded by his great-grandfather, who served in the famed Rough Riders cavalry unit led by Theodore Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. He graduated from the local high school as valedictorian, a feat achieved by all four members of his family, parents included.
The author attended Eastern New Mexico University, graduating summa cum laude, attaining both undergraduate and graduate degrees with an emphasis in finance. He achieved numerous scholarships and academic awards at the institution, serving as graduate assistant at one point and teaching introductory business classes.
Moving to Houston, Nunnally commenced a career in the petroleum industry
with Conoco, a major international oil company, and served in numerous capacities within the company, particularly the oil trading unit. Eventually, he headed the company's Asian trading operations from Singapore. The travels, encounters and experiences from the oil trading wars inspired The Gambit, a novel he always wanted to write about the oil business, foreign intrigues and Houston.
Now retired from ConocoPhillips, the successor to his original company, Nunnally continues to live in Houston with his family. He presently manages investments, consults, and has taken on a writing career. His ties to the petroleum business continue in the form of oil trading for his personal account.
The author has had numerous fascinations in life: Egyptian archaeology, baseball, American and world history, travel, welding, chess, novels by Tolstoy and Hemingway, dairy judging, genealogy, Spanish, living on a kibbutz in Israel, science fiction, Robert Frost poetry, military affairs, biblical scholarship and research, American presidents, cotton farming, Singapore, quail hunting, oil trading and many more. Writing a novel has now been added to the list. Regarding the foregoing, the author firmly agrees with the position espoused by Robert Heinlein, the notable science fiction author, that a human should master many interests and leave specialization to lower life forms.
The author vents on current issues of the day at his blog: Houston- We Have Some Problems
